There are several ways to make your Lent a meaningful experience.
#1 Pick up your family’s CRS Rice Bowl at the entrance of church. During the 40 days of Lent, we will reflect on global hunger and take action to help our sisters and brothers impacted by this injustice. Visit crsricebowl.org.
#2 Copies of the Lent edition of The Word Among Us are available. This has daily meditations for March 2 – April 17.
#3 Habitat for Humanity of Evansville has a Lent Giving Calendar that allows us to count our blessings during Lent and help Habitat for Humanity raise money to help families build strength, stability, and self-reliance. Please take a calendar located on the tables at the entrance of church.

Life-Giving Wounds Spring Virtual Support Group for Adult Children of Divorce
Our virtual support group for men and women who are adult children of divorce or separation (ACODs) launches February 28.  We’ll meet over Zoom for six weeks, Monday evenings, February 28 – April 4, from 8:15-10 p.m.  Each session includes prayer, a presentation, and guided small group breakouts led by trained peer leaders who themselves are ACODs.  Topics include navigating addictions in the family, living the virtue of hope, personal witnesses on overcoming the trauma of family wounds, forging a strong marriage as an ACOD, and more.  Cost is $110 / $55 for college students or consecrated (early bird price before Feb. 10).

Faced with homelessness and mental health challenges, a young Maryland woman didn’t know where to turn when she found herself pregnant and alone over the summer.

Not knowing what else to do, the woman’s grandmother reached out to a parishioner of St. Stephen. Through the intervention of one of the Bradshaw parish’s lay leaders, a staff member at the parish ultimately connected the grandmother with the Gabriel Network at St. Mark in Catonsville – part of a regional organization that helps pregnant mothers with material and other resources.

“They got her the help she desperately needed,” said Rachel Muneses, team leader of the Walking with Moms in Need outreach at St. Stephen and Holy Spirit in Joppa, a new parish-based pro-life initiative of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “Within a couple weeks, she found housing and got the medication she needed for her mental health issues. It showed that there are resources out there. People just need to be made aware of them.” . . .

… Every adult in our parishes should know how to refer a pregnant woman in need to the resources available to her. God referred Mary to the upright man named Joseph. All mothers need more than a teaching lesson from the church, they need our support and the resources of the church…

Each parish is best able to identify the local pregnancy resources that are available and to identify the potential gaps where resources are lacking.

Let us not allow any mother to feel that she is unsupported. May our parishes become “islands of mercy in a sea of indifference.”

The Pregnancy Care Center is committed to the respect and dignity for life and enhancing the quality of human life by providing crisis intervention, support, guidance and education to persons in need…

PCC serves any pregnant mother or family with children up to age 5 in need. …The center provides pregnancy testing, prenatal vitamins, and guidance to agencies that may further help them with needs, such as doctors; the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); public aid; housing; and more.

Possible Events

1. Mass (on the Grass): Celebrate Mass at a special time during the week (either indoor or out)
and invite families to come together. Offer a special blessing. Plan a meal afterward.
2. Family Rosary: Same as #1
3. Recognize the uniqueness of each family in the parish:
a. Young married couples just beginning their families
b. Families who have been a part of the parish for years
c. Generations of families in the parish
d. Families who have adopted for fostered
e. Families with disabilities
f. Families with members, young and old, who have passed
4. Recognize the family as the domestic church
5. Invite the High School and college age members of your parish to an evening and make them
aware that they are the next generation of the parish family
6. Invite a speaker on the topic of marriage and family
7. Provide a special evening of prayer, Reconciliation, and food
8. Recognize the realities of keeping a family Catholic in today’s society

The Feast of the Holy Family falls every year on the Sunday after Christmas (this year, it will be the next day!) We pray to our Lord Jesus through the intercession of His Mother and St. Joseph for the protection of our families and for their blessing on us, especially upon those families suffering adversity at this time.  This is a wonderul opportunity to bless all families at Mass!
National Marriage Week will be observed February 7-14, 2022. 

  • The theme will be Called to the Joy of Love.
  • Plan a Mass and movie night for couples at your parish OR
  • Invite the parents of your school age children to a holy hour
  • There are other ideas like old board game night, card game tournaments OR
  • A good old fashioned Valentine’s Day dance for your married couples.

U.S. Bishops’ Pro-Life Chairman Denounces FDA Decision on Chemical Abortion Pill
WASHINGTON—The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today they will eliminate the safety requirement of in-person dispensing in the Risk Evaluation Mitigation Strategy (REMS) for the chemical abortion drug mifepristone. The FDA’s action clears a path for the drug to be dispensed by clinics, medical offices, and hospitals through the use of online pharmacies or drug delivery services.

In response, Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued the following statement:
“Every life is sacred: the lives of mothers and the lives of the unborn. Not only does this decision further the tragic taking of unborn lives but it does little to care for the well-being of women in need. Far from the accompaniment that women in crisis pregnancies deserve, this decision would leave women alone in the midst of trauma, often without any medical attention or follow up care.

“One of the essential tasks of governments is to safeguard the health and well-being of citizens. As such, the FDA ought to act to protect the lives and health of mothers and children, rather than merely succumbing to the abortion industry’s pressure to loosen safety standards.

“I call on leaders of every level of government to stand with women in need by promoting policies that recognize the value and human dignity of both mother and child, rather than further promoting the devastating tragedy of abortion.”
